The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
