Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
