British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
