Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
